The MCU-related Marvel series have almost all brought a breath of fresh air to the year 2021 within the cinematic universe installed by Marvel. The second batch in 2022 must complete all the promises left by Marvel regarding this new medium. The company will have to prove with Moon Knight that it is capable of stepping out of its comfort zone.

When Kevin Feige proposed the creation of original series on Disney +, it is important to put things in context. Marvel comes out of phase 3 of the MCU with Avengers: Endgame and its previous series were those on Netflix, whose specifications were radically different from those authorized by Disney. We had to wait for Spider-Man: No Way Home for this whole part of the Marvel universe to be validated in the MCU thanks to a cameo whose name we will keep silent so as not to spoil the pleasure of the few who have not yet seen the film. In other words, it was a Marvel in search of a new identity and lots of new ideas to try. One of the promises of Kevin Feige, director of Marvel in the cinema: to take advantage of the format of the Disney + series to try new things which will allow Marvel to evolve.

On the series side, we had the excellent WandaVision series in the form of a sitcom, Loki which tackled the question of the multiverse head-on, and What if...? in the exploration of the multitudes of it, which correspond to these criteria of novelties. Three series that have conquered the hearts of fans both by their originality and by their subject. On the other hand, we could put Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Hawkeye in the "reassuring" category. Works which in no way contrast with the classic formula of a Marvel superhero film, and which have not achieved the same audience figures as those mentioned above. Feige's promise was pretty well kept. Even on the film side, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings with its mixture of Martial Arts and Fantastic genres or The Eternals and its atypical cosmogony as well as its real shots and its starring stars were a success.

And Moon Knight in all this?

According to the trailer for the upcoming Disney+ series scheduled for March 30, 2022, Marvel seems to have come to terms with the idea of having a dark and tortured character, who could break away from the usual colorful world we've been used to until now. here. By paying attention to it, we can notice several things. Already, the main character is prone to multiple personality disorders, rendering him more or less unable to distinguish the real from the unreal. The series will therefore be able to juggle between several genres, such as detective or horror, as evidenced by the elevator scene. Marc Spector could investigate dark doings and realize that it's all his fault.

The character of Moon Knight was also not chosen at random, since he will be the second Marvel anti-hero to be entitled to his own series. The first being Loki. Tom Hiddleston's character is now a fan favorite. And if the latter has been "made less evil" since Thor 3, Moon Knight should not receive the same treatment, since he still evolves in a very dark, very dull environment. Moreover, unlike Loki, Marvel should not try to clear him, to rehabilitate him. On the contrary, the studio should fully accept the madness of his character, otherwise there would be no possible series.

The last interesting point would be to look at the actor who plays him. Oscaar Isaac needs no introduction as he had a prolific career and enormous success. Sucker Punch, Star Wars postlogy and Dune are all hits on his list. The American actor excels in the roles of a magnificent loser, like his role in Inside Llewyn Davis by the Coen brothers. A chameleon actor, he will be able to withstand the lightest scenes as well as the most tragic scenes, as he was able to demonstrate in the excellent HBO series Show Me A Hero (by the great David Simon) or Scenes from a Marriage (based on Bergman's film).

With all this, we realize how completely the series swears with what Marvel has accustomed us to so far. The dark photography of the trailer is enough to prove that Marvel seems to have taken inspiration from across the border, at DC Comics. The hero and his story differ from previous Marvel creations and come closer to WandaVision by exploring a universe hitherto unknown to Marvel. How the series will be treated and received by the public could therefore considerably impact the future of Marvel on Disney+.
