'We should tell him the truth': It was just past midnight when French fans first saw the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer, but that didn't stop them from jumping when they heard it voice. And saw the silhouette of a bald man, whose face, however, was not shown to us.
But whatever. Because difficult to see anything other than the confirmation of the presence of Professor Xavier, famous leader of the X-Men. And in the guise of Patrick Stewart, who has already interpreted it seven times in the cinema (including the post-generic scene of Wolverine 2) between 2000 and 2017, and will delight Tobey Maguire and Willem Dafoe with the longevity record in the skin of a superhero character, which they had had since the release of Spider-Man No Way Home.
We are not there yet and we will come back to it when it is released, on May 4th. For the time being, this appearance marks the first milestone in the integration of the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, planned since the takeover of Fox by Disney, when no film project has been officially announced. Professor Xavier may even be the only mutant to appear in front of Sam Raimi's camera, but in a very symbolic place.
Arrested by Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) for his actions - presumably the spells cast in Spider-Man No Way Home - Strange is led into a towering building never before seen in the MCU and confronted by a six-member assembly, which appears to be one of Charles Xavier. For fans, this can only mean one thing: the Illuminati are coming to the big screen.
A small secret assembly of powerful superheroes representing the different groups of heroes of the Marvel universe, which acts in the shadows and whose existence is revealed in a comic book published in 2005. Its vocation is not so much to fight together, Avengers-style, than coordinating the actions of different teams. And the members are, initially, six in number:
- Iron Man, representing heroes united under the banner of the Avengers (and therefore linked to governments)
- Mr. Fantastic (Reed Richards), representing scientific heroes
- Namor, who rules the oceans and remains affiliated with the anti-heroes
- Black Bolt, representing Inhumans
- Professor Xavier, spokesperson for the mutants
- Doctor Strange, representative of the mystical branch
In addition to opening the door to the X-Men and Fantastic 4. To many observers, Mr. Fantastic is even the leftmost figure when Strange enters the room, while the long-haired person walking appears to be Mordo. Who could be the representative of the mystical heroes before Sam Raimi's film begins. And it's not the first time Namor has been mentioned, as a quickly deleted tweet from Scott Derrickson, the project's first director, teased his presence in 2019.
After turning around, then stepping into it thanks to Spider-Man No Way Home, the MCU should therefore dive headfirst into the multiverse with the aptly named Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. And the feature film would be a turning point, both for this Phase IV and for the entire company headed by Kevin Feige, by involving the Illuminati and these mythical heroes. With no doubt a few surprises in store.
If the feature film confirms, in a quasi-official way, the presence of the Illuminati and Charles Xavier, it is because it has other assets that it will keep up its sleeve until May. And that it will thus raise several questions: will Iron Man be there, given his fate in Endgame? If so, will it be a variant played by Robert Downey Jr. or an actor actor? Will the historical members be present, or will the film take liberties? Given the reception given to the Inhumans series, it would be surprising, for example, to find Black Bolt. Or with another face.
And if Namor and Mr. Fantastic were to sit, will we discover their interpreters, or will we only be entitled to silhouettes in the dark and mentions of their name? On the side of the X-Men, the presence of Charles Xavier does not necessarily mean that other mutants will be there too, and vong questions also arise as to his identity: will he be the character we know? , from an alternate reality (and certainly dead in Logan, but this one takes place in 2029, and Strange 2 in 2024 in all likelihood)? Or his counterpart in the Avengers world, who happens to have the same performer, like J.K. Simmons' J. Jonah Jameson?
With Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Marvel will therefore have to negotiate a particularly tight turn, which could allow it to find its cruising speed. Because he will have to find the balance between expanding the borders of his multiverse and not forgetting that the story is centered on the character played by Benedict Cumberbatch (who will appear in three versions), especially if the rumor of reshoots intended to multiply the cameos is true.
So that the "dimensions with infinite possibilities" promised by the trailer does not give rise to an upside-down opus where fan service more or less justified, and the search for atmospheres that we only thought we could see in the stages within the rooms do not take precedence over the stakes of the story. No matter how rich its potential.
